Total Solar Eclipse (Spain/Iceland)

August 12, 2026 at 12:00 AM UTC

Mission Overview

A spectacular total solar eclipse will sweep across the Northern Atlantic, passing over Iceland and northern Spain, providing a rare opportunity for millions to witness the solar corona. This will be the first total solar eclipse visible from continental Europe since 1999. In Spain, the path of totality will cross several major cities including Gijón, León, Burgos, and Zaragoza, occurring just before sunset. Observers in the path of totality will experience several minutes of darkness as the Moon completely blocks the Sun, revealing the Sun’s outer atmosphere—the corona—while stars and planets become visible against the darkened sky.
