Mission Overview

Artemis III will be the first crewed lunar landing since Apollo 17 in 1972. It marks a historic return of humanity to the Moon, including the first woman and first person of color to walk on the lunar surface. The mission will target the lunar South Pole, a region known for its permanently shadowed craters that may contain water ice. This ice is a critical resource for future long-term lunar habitation and deep-space exploration, as it can be converted into oxygen and rocket fuel. Astronauts will conduct scientific experiments, gather samples, and lay the groundwork for the Artemis Base Camp.
